For some applications, especially recycling and compounding, materials need to be homogenised across production batches and recycling cycles to ensure consistency of the finished product as variations in bulk density can affect the melt flow of the material leading to inconsistent processing.

By blending several batches of material together in a vertical blender (sometimes called a fountain blender); this consistency can then be achieved at a more cost effective level than using gravimetric blending.

Some blends of material also suffer from separation when standing, in these cases cycling the material in a mixer and using the material from the mixer direct to process can be the solution.
